Mobile devices such as smart phone (iPhone, Samsung), netbook and Ipad are widely popularized in modern society due to the speedy development of the internet. Communication and media companies, such as Fido and Bell, have provided reasonable internet coverage in most Canadian cities.
The forms of entertainment in the younger generation have shifted onto another medium. New entertainment activities such as online electronic game are popular among young people. In addition, many traditional activities have shifted onto electronic platforms; people can read books and play board game without real books and real cards. People are now more dependent on their cellphones and the access to internet.
In this information age, traditional marketing means have lost their original dominance. For example, advertisements on magazines and billboards are not as effective as they were 10 years ago because of the current tendencies of reading electronic book on cellphones and shopping online. In contrast, the development of the virtual society has brought about a variety of new opportunities. Social media marketing is a good example, and Twitter is one of the most successful. There are 695,750,000 registered users and 342 million active users. Enormous number of people post contents and creating hashtags every minute. Meanwhile, Twitter users trend to be younger and are also familiar with using different kinds of social media platforms. Therefore, knowing how to take advantages of Twitter can be extremely advantageous to a business’s success.
How to use twitter skillfully?
1. Attention to the popular hashtags at any moment.
Popular hashtags is a quick to identify social media trends and being able to participate in these conversations will help company to appear more fashionable and increases its exposure rate.
2. Follow the up-to-date local business.
Knowing other businesses in your area will help you establish relationships with them and develop the new opportunities. This can also lead to collaborations in local events that can attract more customers.
3. Maintain communication with your customers
Be approachable to your customers. No questions are too silly to answer. Use this platform to communicate with your customers, understand your customers, and also increase exposure rate.
4. Retain contests.
Contests are a great way to help increase the number of sales. Announcing these contests online can help increase the amount of customers and the company’s visibility. For instance, if you are running a bakery, you could hold a contest about people’s favourite flavour and variety of breads. The result and advices could help develop new menu items.
Like any circle, social media has its own rules. Tools like Twitter can help promote your brand but it is also vital to remember a few rules before posting or starting a new social media campaign.
The five key points you should pay attention to before posting:
1. Internet does not forget
The internet stores everything, nothing will be forgotten. Topics from 10 years ago can suddenly be revived. Every thread and conversation will be saved so always remember this before posting anything.
2. Don’t meddle with politics
Politic is a sensitive topic for most people. Extra care should be given to ensure that nothing posted can be interpreted as a political statement.
3. Pick a suitable username and correct hashtags
Choose a suitable username is very important. One should do some research on existing similar names and whether if there are any negative history to them. Also picking the right hashtag is important as your message might be grouped into a completely different group than what you have intended.
4. Separate work and play
Always have a separate work account or even a separate work phone. Nothing is worse than posting a personal comment using the company account.
5. Double check before posting
Grammar and spelling are not the first thing people think about when posting but it is very important when it comes to a company’s image. Misspelling can lead to severe repercussions. For example, Mitt Romney’s “With Mitt” campaign in 2012 had a rocky start because America was misspelled as “Amercia.”
Questions for thought:
1. Do you think if these 5 points distracts the reader from the message?
2. Do you think that it is crucial to have separate work and personal phones?

Bum su young. the most interest part was the Retain contests
回复删除to help increase the number of sales. also, part of hashtags was well . I want to know more detail the both parts if have time.
Hashtag oversight can cost the wrong type of expose and it makes the business look careless. Celeb Boutique while trying to launch a new dress used the #Aurora hashtag. #Aurora was a hashtag associated witht he tragic Colorado massacre.
删除Many companies now post online contests using twitter to gain more attention.

回复删除Even though there are a lot of loop-holes, it won't weaken the influence that online marketing and sales are now the most effective strategy on marketing.
I agree, it is one of the most effective since a large percentage of the population have access to the internet.

回复删除Since nowadays we all exposure to the Internet, social media has become an excellent way to introduce people to a brand or to sell products. There is no doubt that social media marketing is one of the most crucial portions of marketing strategy. However, there is nothing private on the internet. In order to avoid over exposure to the internet, we may consider to separate business social media account from a personal account and think twice before posting or commenting anything.
Group 10:
删除Yes, definitely. Many mistakes were made by individual posting using the business account. Business accounts needs to be sincere and professional but this level of professionalism is not always carry through after work. Separation of business and personal phones is one of the best ways to not make this mistake.
Twitter is new to me. But just as other kind of electric product, it is popular in many fields, including business communication. It is effective to help business company get more customers so as to generate revenue. However, we cannot ignore the side effect of twitter in case we lose not only our profit but also something that belongs to our privacy. I think this group expressed their view very clear and concise, especially student Yao did a great job for this topic.
回复删除thank you ^^
删除Twitter is definitely a great tool since it cost nothing to start. Professional media oversight is recommended but its not required as long as the owner has some social media plan.
Christine truong:
删除It's true that once something is online, it is there forever. I don't have a twitter but I've seen multiple people tweet and post things without thinking about the consequences would be later on. So to answer your question, if you are a business professional, I would recommend having two separate phones for work and personal,or at least two different accounts; one strictly for business and the other for personal use.
I agree, two phones might be expensive for some but having two separate accounts is a must.
删除Yes, a lot of business failed to remember some of these points and either lost potential customers or have their image dented.
回复删除Internet marketing can be exposed to more people, but it also will lead to more disputes among the internet. This would be a good side that means your topic or product may attract people’s eyes, though nowadays those disputes often go on the wrong track. Because no one knows you on the internet, people would not care and respect others, even though intend to hurt others. So the company or people who want to use internet tools as a market way, have to consider those negative part.

Personally, I don't think the five key points detracts from the message at all. It's important to remember each of these items, because in the hospitality industry customers tend to form either positive or negative attachments to businesses, and they can be very fickle. While it's definitely a good idea to connect with your customers over social media, one misstep and it's exactly like the first point, the internet never forgets, and the customer won't either. Since social media is another way for businesses to get their brand name out to the public and garner recognition, it's essential to make sure all of these points have been covered before starting an account, and again before posting anything.

We know that whatever we put in social media can be traced even though it has been deleted. However, people who uses social media, specifically a professional businessman or a politician, should be aware the consequences of posting in social media even if it is against the people who posted the media. In answering to your second question, I would say, NO. If you know how to manage your time and be responsible for the actions you do, 1 phone is enough for a person who knows his/her limits and knowing how to properly handle it.
删除I would recommend having two separate phones for work and personal,or at least two different accounts; one strictly for business and the other for personal use.

回复删除some people are trying to maintain a clear line between the two by carrying two cellphones. They are putting up with a cumbersome second device—and an additional phone bill—in favor of the ability to unplug from the office without going phone-less. And with pictures of the children on one device and emails to the boss on the other, having two phones creates an extra layer of privacy.
回复删除Angelo:
回复删除To answer your last question, I think it would be safer for people who work high profile jobs to have separate phones. It would be unprofessional for your colleagues to see personal images and msgs that you are sending and having with friends and family. There is also the chance that you could ruin your entire professional career because of the personal stuff you have on your phone, the risk of that is too high to ignore.
I think having a separate work phone is a necessity, and in some instances it should become an absolute necessity.
回复删除For example, famous Youtubers or Twitter users usually have a separate, alternate SIM for setting up accounts so their private, personal SIM would risk a much lower chance of getting leaked if their alternate SIM got hacked.
Also I want to add that social media platforms/services such as Facebook and Twitter are significantly becoming popular among older people. Consider this--keeping updated with family who live on the other side of the planet, as well as keeping up with news updates and politician tweets. The demeanor to use these social media services/platforms is in no way restricted to younger people. Given another decade, the age 35-44 category would probably be able to catch up or even surpass the 25-34 group. I've taught 60 year olds on how to post on Facebook upon their request. My mom is addicted to Wechat and is in need of serious help. As a middle-aged man, my dad checks twitter basically every night. So I think in the year 2016, it's about time to move on from using statements such as "Twitter users tend to be younger" as it can be quite misleading, even though it is statistically true at the moment.

Question #3 - I personally have had the opportunity to have had both a work and personal phone yes in someways it is a very good thing because it keeps both parts of your life separate, you don't have to worry about separating your bill to submit for expenses and you don't have to worry about overlapping business and pleasure.

回复删除I think it would be best to have separate work and personal phones. For business purposes you want to keep control of your professional appearance; for customers, business partner. Personal phones to stay in touch with your family and friends.
